# Single-Stage vs Two-Stage Paint Correction: Which Does Your Car Need?

> Single-stage correction is a one-step polish from $300. Two-stage adds a cutting step first, from $650. Here is what each one removes, how to tell which your paint needs, and why the right answer isn't always the bigger one.

## Quick Answer

- **Single-stage correction** is one machine-polishing step with a fine polish. It lifts light swirls, haze and dullness and brings the gloss back. With us it starts at **$300**.
- **Two-stage correction** adds a cutting step first: a compound removes heavier swirls, water spots and light scratches, then a polish refines the finish. It starts at **$650**.
- **Which you need** depends on how deep the defects go, not on how much you want to spend. We inspect the paint under our hex lights and measure paint depth before we recommend either one.

If your paint mostly looks dull or has faint swirls you only notice in direct sun, single-stage is usually enough. If you can see swirls and scratches in normal daylight, or the car has been through years of brush car washes, plan on two-stage.

## What "Stage" Actually Means

A stage is one full pass over the car with a machine polisher, a pad and a product.

- **Single stage** uses a fine polish. It removes a very thin layer of clear coat, enough to level light marring, and leaves the paint glossy in the same step.
- **Two stage** starts with a compound, which cuts faster and deeper, to take out defects a polish can't reach. Compounding leaves its own fine haze, so the second stage is a polish that refines the surface back to full gloss.

More stages means more clear coat removed, more time on the car and a higher price. That's why the goal is always the smallest correction that gets the result, not the biggest one on the menu.

## Side by Side

| | Single-Stage | Two-Stage |
|---|---|---|
| Steps | One polishing step | Compounding step, then polishing step |
| Removes | Light swirls, haze, oxidation, dullness | Heavier swirls, water spots, light scratches |
| Typical result | Big jump in gloss, most light marring gone | Most visible defects gone, deeper clarity |
| Clear coat removed | Less | More |
| Time | About half a day | Most of a day |
| Starting price | $300 | $650 |

Both include a hand wash, decontamination and a clay bar before polishing, and a ceramic spray wax to finish. A 12-month ceramic paint sealant is available as an add-on if you aren't going on to a coating.

For neglected paint, buffer trails or deeper marring there is also three-stage correction from $900: a heavy cut, a medium polish and a finishing polish.

## How to Tell Which Your Car Needs

You can get a good idea at home before you book.

1. **Wash the car, then look at it in direct sun.** Swirls show as a cobweb of circles around the reflection of the sun.
2. **Now look in shade or on a cloudy day.** If the swirls disappear, they're light, and single-stage is likely. If you can still see them, two-stage is likely.
3. **Look for straight, isolated scratches.** Run a fingernail across one. If your nail doesn't catch, it's in the clear coat and two-stage usually takes it out. If your nail catches, it may be too deep to polish out completely.
4. **Think about the car's history.** Years of brush car washes, a dark colour or a used car with unknown history all point toward two-stage.

This gets you close. The final call happens at the shop, under the hex lights, with a paint depth gauge on every panel. Some panels on the same car need more than others, and a repainted panel may have less clear coat to work with.

## When Single-Stage Is the Smarter Choice

- **Newer cars.** Light swirls from dealer prep and the first few washes usually come out in a single stage.
- **Cars going under a ceramic coating or PPF.** Single-stage correction is already included in our 3 Year ($1,000) and 5 Year ($1,300) ceramic coatings and in our PPF packages, so the paint is polished before it's sealed or filmed.
- **Light-coloured cars.** White, silver and light grey hide fine swirls. Single-stage often gets these cars looking as good as two-stage would.
- **Keeping clear coat in reserve.** Every correction removes some clear coat. If single-stage gets the result you want, there's no reason to take more.

## When Two-Stage Is Worth It

- **Black and dark colours.** Dark paint shows every defect, and the difference between single- and two-stage is easy to see.
- **Older or heavily washed cars.** Years of brush car washes and bad drying technique leave defects a polish alone can't reach.
- **Water spots that have etched in.** Spots that won't wash off are often etched into the clear coat and need a cutting step.
- **You want the best possible base before protection.** If your paint needs more than a single stage, two-stage correction can be quoted alongside a ceramic coating or PPF so the deeper defects aren't sealed in.

## What Correction Won't Fix

Polishing only works inside the clear coat. A scratch that has gone through to the colour or primer, a rock chip or a dent can't be polished away. We'll tell you honestly what will and won't come out before we start.

Once the paint is corrected, how you wash decides how long it stays that way. ## Frequently Asked Questions

**Is two-stage correction always better than single-stage?**
No. Two-stage removes deeper defects, but it also removes more clear coat and costs more. If your paint only has light swirls, single-stage gets nearly the same visible result.

**How much does paint correction cost in Toronto?**
With us, single-stage starts at $300, two-stage at $650 and three-stage at $900. Final pricing depends on vehicle size, paint condition and the stage we recommend after inspection.

**Can you do single-stage on some panels and two-stage on others?**
Paint condition often varies around the car. Tell us what bothers you most and we'll recommend a plan after we inspect the paint.

**Does a new car need paint correction?**
Often a light one. New cars commonly arrive with fine swirls from transport and dealer prep, and a single stage usually removes them. It's already included in our ceramic coating and PPF packages.

**Will two-stage correction remove every scratch?**
It removes most swirls, water spots and light scratches in the clear coat. Scratches that have cut into the colour or primer need paint work rather than polishing.
