> TL;DR: All three XPEL films are ceramic-based and carry a lifetime warranty. Prime XR Plus leads on heat rejection with the clearest look. Prime XR Black delivers the same performance with a darker, more traditional tint appearance. Prime CS is the value option — nano-ceramic technology at a lower price point. Read on for the full side-by-side comparison.
Why XPEL?
XPEL is one of the leading window film brands in North America and a common benchmark when comparing premium tint options. Their Prime line uses nano-ceramic technology — small ceramic particles suspended in the film that block infrared heat and UV without relying on metal layers (which interfere with signals) or dye (which fades over time).
Advanced Vehicle Guard is an XPEL-certified installer for all three Prime films. Here's how they compare.

Ready to protect your vehicle?
Expert PPF, ceramic coating, wraps, and detailing — serving all of Greater Toronto from our Etobicoke shop.
Prime XR Plus is XPEL's flagship film — the highest-performing option across all metrics.
Heat rejection: Up to 66% Total Solar Energy Rejected (TSER). In practical terms, on a hot Toronto summer day, the cabin temperature difference between Prime XR Plus and no tint is immediately noticeable — the air conditioning runs less hard and the car cools faster after sitting in the sun.
Appearance: Available across the full VLT range (5%–70%). At lighter VLT levels (35–70%), the film has a near-invisible look from the outside — the glass looks slightly dark but you can't easily tell it's tinted. This makes it the preferred choice for clients who want maximum heat rejection without a dramatically tinted appearance.
Best for: Clients who prioritize heat rejection above all else, or who want a lighter shade that still performs at the highest level. Common choice for front windshields and panoramic roofs where appearance matters more than darkness.
XPEL Prime XR Black
Prime XR Black delivers the same nano-ceramic performance as XR Plus with a different aesthetic — darker, with a deeper black appearance that many clients associate with traditional tint.
Heat rejection: Up to 63% TSER — marginally behind XR Plus but still among the highest-performing films available.
Appearance: Available from 5% to 35% VLT, meaning it's best suited for darker shade preferences. The film has a rich, true-black appearance that looks intentional and custom from the outside. At 20% or 35%, it's a popular choice for rear side windows and rear glass on SUVs, trucks, and luxury vehicles.
Best for: Clients who want the performance of ceramic film and the dark, traditional tint look. Popular on BMW X5, Range Rover, Porsche Cayenne, and similar vehicles where a blacked-out rear glass complements the vehicle's styling.
Prime XR Plus vs Prime XR Black — which to choose?
If you want darker shades and the traditional deep-black tint look: Prime XR Black.
If you want lighter shades or the highest possible heat rejection: Prime XR Plus.
Many clients use both — XR Plus on front windows (where VLT limits apply) and XR Black on rear windows for privacy.
XPEL Prime CS
Prime CS is XPEL's entry point into the ceramic tier — a carbon-ceramic hybrid that outperforms carbon-only films while coming in at a lower price than XR Plus or XR Black.
Heat rejection: Up to 52% TSER — significantly better than dyed or carbon-only films, which typically land in the 30–45% range.
Appearance: Available across a broad VLT range with a clean, neutral tone. No colour shift or purple fade over time.
Best for: Clients who want to step up from carbon film without the full premium of XR Plus or XR Black. A strong choice for daily drivers where performance matters but budget is a consideration.
How to Decide
Choose Prime XR Plus if:
Heat rejection is your primary goal
You want a lighter shade (35–70% VLT) on front windows
You have a panoramic sunroof or large greenhouse area
You're tinting a Tesla or vehicle with significant glass area
Choose Prime XR Black if:
You want a dark, classic tint appearance on rear glass
Privacy is a priority
You're tinting an SUV, truck, or luxury vehicle where the dark look fits the styling
Choose Prime CS if:
You want ceramic performance at a more accessible price
You're upgrading from carbon film
Budget is a consideration but you don't want to compromise on UV rejection or colour stability
Mixing Films on One Vehicle
A common approach: use Prime XR Plus on front side windows (where VLT compliance matters and heat rejection is prioritized) and Prime XR Black on rear side and rear glass (where darker shades are legal and the privacy look is desired). This gives you the best of both films across the vehicle.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do XPEL ceramic films interfere with my phone or GPS?
No — ceramic and carbon-ceramic films don't use metallic layers, so there's no signal interference with mobile, GPS, toll transponders, or radio.
Can I get Prime XR Plus on my windshield?
Yes — in Ontario, tint is permitted on the top 15 cm of the windshield (the AS-1 line). A light VLT Prime XR Plus strip across the top of the windshield reduces sun glare significantly without affecting visibility.
How long do XPEL Prime films last?
All three carry a lifetime warranty against bubbling, peeling, delamination, and colour change — no time limit.
Do you install XPEL films near Oakville and Burlington?
Yes — we serve the full GTA from Etobicoke, including Oakville, Burlington, Mississauga, and beyond.
