> TL;DR: SUVs and trucks cost more to tint than sedans due to larger glass area and rear window complexity. Most owners focus on front side windows and the windshield strip since rear glass often comes with factory privacy tint. Ceramic film is especially worthwhile on SUVs with panoramic roofs. Read on for coverage options and 2026 pricing.
Why SUV and Truck Tinting Is Different
Tinting an SUV or truck isn't the same as tinting a sedan. A few key differences:
More glass. Full-size SUVs, minivans, and trucks have significantly more total glass area than a compact or mid-size sedan. Rear side windows may be larger, rear glass is often wider, and many modern SUVs have panoramic sunroofs or extended roof glass that sedans don't.
Rear window complexity. Many trucks and some SUVs have a rear window with a defroster grid and complex curves. These require precise digital-plotter cutting — hand cutting on a curved, defogged rear window is one of the most common causes of scratched defroster lines in low-quality installs.
Factory privacy glass. Most SUVs and trucks already come with factory-tinted rear glass — typically in the 15–20% VLT range. This affects what additional film is needed and where.
Panoramic roofs. Many popular SUVs — BMW X5, Range Rover Sport, Porsche Cayenne, Volvo XC90, and others — have large panoramic glass roofs. These are a major source of heat and UV in the cabin and benefit enormously from a high-rejection ceramic film.
Understanding Factory Privacy Glass
Factory "privacy glass" (the dark rear windows that come standard on most SUVs) is actually tinted glass — the colour is baked into the glass during manufacturing. It provides privacy and some UV filtering but very limited heat rejection compared to quality window film.
Adding window film over factory privacy glass is legal and effective. Film over dark factory glass at 35% VLT results in a combined appearance close to 20%+ darkness, which many SUV owners want on the rear glass. More importantly, adding ceramic film over factory glass dramatically improves heat rejection — something the factory glass alone doesn't do.
Coverage Options for SUVs and Trucks
Front Side Windows Only
Ready to protect your vehicle?
Expert PPF, ceramic coating, wraps, and detailing — serving all of Greater Toronto from our Etobicoke shop.
The most common request from SUV owners who already have privacy glass on the rear. Tinting the front side windows brings them closer to the rear in appearance and adds heat/UV protection for driver and front passenger. In Ontario, front windows must stay at 70% VLT — a light ceramic film at legal limits still provides meaningful heat rejection.
Front Windows + Windshield Strip
Adding a ceramic film strip across the top of the windshield (Ontario-legal, top 15 cm) addresses the single biggest source of sun glare and direct UV exposure for the driver. A 50% or 70% VLT ceramic strip is barely visible but blocks significant heat and UV from the top of the windshield.
Panoramic Roof Film
For SUVs with panoramic sunroofs, a dedicated roof film is one of the most impactful comfort upgrades available. The large glass area overhead admits substantial infrared heat on sunny days. XPEL Prime XR Plus at a lighter VLT (50–70%) on a panoramic roof dramatically reduces cabin temperature without significantly changing the appearance of the roof glass from inside or outside.
Full Vehicle Tint
For SUVs without factory privacy glass, or for owners who want a consistent, darker look across all glass, a full tint covering all side windows and rear glass creates a unified appearance and maximum coverage.

Popular SUV Models We Tint in Toronto
BMW X3, X5, X7 — Often requested for front windows plus panoramic roof film. The large roof glass on these models is a significant heat source.
Range Rover and Range Rover Sport — Popular for full vehicle tint in XR Black at 20–35% on rear glass. The dark, blacked-out look suits the styling well.
Porsche Cayenne and Macan — Front windows at legal VLT, rear glass at 20–35%, often paired with a paint protection package.
Ford F-150 and RAM 1500 — Trucks often have large rear sliding windows that require careful plotter cutting. Front windows and rear cab glass are the most common tint areas.
Tesla Model Y and Model X — Panoramic roof film is particularly popular on Tesla models given the large fixed glass roof. The heat rejection difference on a Model Y with Prime XR Plus on the roof is significant in summer.
Toyota Highlander, Honda Pilot, Kia Telluride — Typically requested for front windows plus rear glass top-up over existing factory privacy tint.
How Long Does SUV Tinting Take?
Most SUVs take 3–5 hours depending on glass complexity and coverage. Trucks with sliding rear windows or complex cab configurations take slightly longer. We book SUV tinting appointments first thing in the morning to allow full curing time during the day.

Frequently Asked Questions
My SUV already has dark rear windows — should I still tint them?
Factory privacy glass provides minimal heat rejection despite its dark appearance. Adding a ceramic film over factory glass adds meaningful heat and UV protection while maintaining the same visual appearance.
Can you tint the panoramic roof on my BMW or Range Rover?
Yes — panoramic roof film is a standard service. We use XPEL Prime XR Plus on most roof glass applications for maximum heat rejection.
Will tinting my front windows affect my side mirror visibility at night?
A properly installed legal-limit film (70% VLT on fronts) has minimal impact on night visibility. Very dark films on front windows would reduce visibility — which is also why Ontario restricts front window VLT.
Do you tint trucks from Ajax and Pickering?
Yes — we serve the full GTA including Ajax and Pickering from our Etobicoke location.
