The First Two Weeks After a Ceramic Coating: What to Do and What to Avoid

Quick Answer

A ceramic coating keeps curing for a while after you pick the car up. Treat it gently and it bonds properly and lasts its full life.

  • First 24 hours: keep the car dry. No water on the paint at all.
  • First 7 days: no washing of any kind, not by hand and not at a car wash.
  • Through the first two weeks: nothing goes on top of the coating: no wax, sealant, quick detailer or spray "toppers". No automatic car washes.
  • If something lands on it: bird droppings, sap and bugs come off straight away, gently, with a soft, damp microfibre. Don't scrub.
  • After the first week: a gentle hand wash with a pH-neutral shampoo.
  • Then come back for your free check-up. We look the coating over, and that visit is when your warranty starts.

We'll go over the instructions for the coating on your car when you pick it up. If anything here disagrees with what we tell you at pickup, follow that.

Why the First Two Weeks Matter

When a coating is applied, it bonds to the clear coat and then keeps hardening as it cures. On the day you pick the car up it's already protecting the paint, but it isn't at full strength yet.

During that time the surface is more sensitive. Water left to dry on it can leave spots more easily, harsh chemicals can interfere with the cure, and anything layered on top can stop the coating from bonding and levelling the way it should. A few days of care at the start is what gets you years of protection later.

The First 24 Hours: Keep It Dry

The first day is the most sensitive. Keep water off the paint completely for at least 24 hours.

  • Check the forecast and park indoors or under cover if rain is coming.
  • Stay away from sprinklers, and don't park where anything can drip on the car.
  • Don't touch the paint. Leaning on it, wiping dust off or putting things on the hood all put marks into a soft surface.

The First Week: No Washing

After the first 24 hours, the coating can handle getting wet, but it still shouldn't be washed for the first 7 days.

  • No washing. Not by hand, not touchless, not a rinse at the car wash.
  • Park indoors when you can, away from trees that drop sap.
  • Avoid parking near construction if you have a choice. Overspray and dust are harder to deal with on a fresh coating.

If Something Lands on It

Bird droppings and bug splatter are acidic, and they're worse on a coating that's still curing. Don't leave them until the first wash.

1. Soak a clean, soft microfibre in water.

2. Lay it over the spot for a minute to soften it.

3. Lift it off gently. Don't scrub.

4. Pat the area dry with a second clean microfibre.

Tree sap is the same: soften it and lift it, don't pick or scrape. If something won't come off gently, call us before you try anything stronger.

If It Rains

After the first 24 hours, rain won't ruin the coating. The thing to avoid is water drying on the surface and leaving spots behind.

When you can, pat the car dry with a clean, plush microfibre towel. Don't drag a towel across dusty, wet paint, and don't use a squeegee or chamois. If you notice spots that won't come off with a damp microfibre, let us know rather than reaching for a cleaner.

Through Week Two: Nothing on Top

  • No wax, sealant, spray detailer or "ceramic booster". The coating needs to cure on its own. Anything layered over it can leave haze or stop it from bonding properly.
  • No automatic car washes. Brush washes put swirls into paint whether it's coated or not, and harsh chemicals at some touchless washes aren't good for a coating that's still curing.
  • No harsh cleaners. Degreasers, all-purpose cleaners, dish soap and bug-and-tar removers stay away from the paint.

Your First Wash

After the first 7 days, the coating is ready for a gentle wash:

1. Rinse the car well to take off loose dirt before anything touches it.

2. Wash with a pH-neutral car shampoo and a clean microfibre mitt, using two buckets: one with soapy water, one with clean water to rinse the mitt.

3. Work top to bottom, with light pressure. Let the shampoo do the work.

4. Rinse thoroughly, then dry with a plush microfibre drying towel. Don't let it air dry in the sun.

From here, this is your routine. Our ceramic coated car washing guide covers how often to wash and what to avoid long term.

Your Free Check-Up Starts the Warranty

Every ceramic coating we apply comes with a free check-up appointment two to three weeks after install. There's nothing to pay. You bring the car back, we look the coating over to make sure it has cured properly and everything is as it should be, and that visit is when your coating's warranty starts.

It's also the best time to ask questions. If something looked off in the first two weeks, a high spot, a patch that doesn't bead or a mark you aren't sure about, we'll take care of it there.

After That

  • Wash every couple of weeks, more often in winter when there's salt on the roads.
  • Keep avoiding brush car washes. A coating resists light wash marring, but it can't stop a brush full of grit.
  • Book the yearly maintenance visit. Each year we inspect the coating and give it a decontamination wash. That visit keeps your coating's warranty valid, and we'll remind you when it's due.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long before I can wash my car after a ceramic coating?

Keep it completely dry for the first 24 hours, and don't wash it for the first 7 days. After that, wash gently by hand with a pH-neutral shampoo. Skip automatic car washes for the first two weeks, and skip brush washes for good.

What happens if my new coating gets rained on?

In the first 24 hours, keep it out of the rain if you can. After that, rain won't ruin the coating. Pat the car dry with a clean microfibre when you can so water doesn't dry into spots.

When does my ceramic coating warranty start?

At your free check-up appointment two to three weeks after install. You bring the car back at no charge, we look the coating over, and the warranty starts from that visit.

Can I wax a ceramic coated car?

Not in the first two weeks, and there's little reason to afterwards. Wax doesn't bond well to a coating and can hide its water behaviour. Ask us before putting anything on top of it.

Can I drive the car right away?

Yes. You drive it home the day you pick it up. The precautions are about water, washing and what touches the paint, not about driving.

When is the yearly maintenance visit?

Around the anniversary of your coating, give or take a month. We'll remind you when it's coming up.

What if I see a high spot or haze after pickup?

Let us know right away. It's much easier to take care of in the first few days than after the coating has fully cured.
