Quick Answer
Matte or satin PPF is clear paint protection film with a non-glossy finish. Laid over gloss paint, it turns the car's finish satin while your original colour shows through, and it protects the paint from stone chips like regular PPF.
- The look: your colour, without the shine. Often called a stealth or frozen finish.
- The protection: the same kind of thick urethane film as clear gloss PPF, so it takes the chips instead of your paint.
- Reversible: the factory gloss paint is still there underneath, protected, if you ever want it back.
- Care: no polishing and no wax. Matte finishes need matte-safe products.
Matte and satin film are quoted per vehicle. Tell us the car and the coverage and we'll price it.
Matte PPF vs Matte Paint vs Matte Colour PPF
There are three ways to get a matte car, and they're easy to mix up.
| Clear matte PPF | Factory or respray matte paint | Matte colour PPF | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Keeps your colour | Yes | Depends on the paint | No, changes the colour |
| Stops stone chips | Yes | No | Yes |
| Reversible | Yes | No | Yes |
| Can be polished | No | No | No |
Matte paint is beautiful, but it's notoriously hard to live with: it can't be polished, so scratches and chips are permanent unless the panel is repainted. Matte PPF gives you the look, and the film takes the damage.
If you want a new colour as well as the matte finish, that's colour PPF, from $4,500. Our BMW X5 in full-body matte black colour PPF, with gloss black accents, is on our colour PPF page.
How It Looks on Different Colours
The film changes how the paint reflects light, not the colour itself, but the effect varies:
- Black and dark colours go deep and stealthy, and body lines show up strongly.
- Greys and silvers take on a satin, almost metal-like finish.
- White and light colours go soft and creamy.
- Metallic and pearl paints keep some of their sparkle under satin film, but with a softer finish.

Full Body or Just Some Panels?
Matte film almost always goes on the whole car. A matte front end on an otherwise gloss car looks mismatched, so the clear gloss film in our partial packages is usually the better choice for chip protection alone.
The exception is deliberate contrast. A matte hood, roof or mirror caps on a gloss car can look intentional, like the gloss accents on our matte X5 in reverse.
Caring for Matte PPF
Matte finishes are lower maintenance in some ways and stricter in others.
The rules:
- Never polish it. Polish and compound make matte film shiny in patches.
- No wax or gloss products. Waxes, glazes and "shine" sprays fill the texture and leave blotchy, glossy spots.
- Use matte-safe shampoo. A pH-neutral shampoo with no gloss enhancers or waxes.
- No brush car washes. Touchless or a gentle hand wash only.
- Deal with bird droppings and bugs quickly. A soft, damp microfibre lifts them off; don't scrub.
The good news: like gloss film, premium matte film has a self-healing top coat, so light wash marks disappear with heat. And unlike matte paint, a deep scratch or chip damages the film, not the paint. Damaged film can be replaced on that panel.
A ceramic coating over matte film has to be one made for matte finishes. A regular gloss coating can add shine. Ask us before putting any product on matte film.
Our matte Lamborghini Aventador detail shows the same matte-safe approach on factory matte paint.
Who It Suits
- You love the look of matte paint but don't want to live with paint you can never polish or fix.
- You're keeping the car's value. The factory gloss stays underneath, protected, so you can return the car to original whenever you like.
- You're leasing. A full matte finish now, factory gloss back at turn-in, as long as the film is removed properly.
- You want full-body protection and a different look at the same time.
It might not be for you if you love deep, wet-looking gloss, or if you'd rather not change your wash products and habits.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you put matte PPF on a gloss car?
Yes. Clear matte or satin film goes over gloss paint and gives the whole car a satin finish while your colour shows through. The gloss paint underneath is protected and untouched.
What's the difference between matte and satin PPF?
Satin has a little sheen. Matte is flatter. Both hide the paint's gloss while letting the colour through. Which one looks better depends on the colour and the car.
How much does matte PPF cost?
It's quoted per vehicle, based on the car and the coverage. Full-body clear gloss PPF starts at $4,000 for comparison. Payment plans are available; ask when you book.
Can matte PPF be removed?
Yes. Like any PPF, it can be removed, and the factory gloss paint underneath is still there.
Can I wax matte PPF?
No. Wax and gloss products leave shiny, blotchy patches on matte film. Use matte-safe products only.
Does matte PPF self-heal?
Premium matte film has a self-healing top coat, so light marks disappear with heat from the sun or warm water, the same as gloss film.
